Travel Planning Idea - Establishing Your Vacation Budget
Published Monday, June 3rd 2019 - Updated Monday, June 3rd 2019An important part of vacation planning is setting a realistic budget. Your budget, combined with flexibility and overall vacation value, will help you and your travel agent focus on the things that will lead to an affordable dream vacation.
When you are ready to plan your vacation, consider costs related to each of the factors listed below.
- Destination – Popular destinations such as some Caribbean islands and Hawaii are going to be more expensive than less popular. Destinations that are gaining in popularity will also require higher budgets.
- Timing – Consider the time of year when certain destinations are less expensive than others. For example, popular European cities will be less expensive during winter months than during summer. The most popular timing for Caribbean islands is outside hurricane season, which is typically November through June.
- Vacation Length – In most cases, a shorter length vacation will be less than an equivalent vacation of longer length. However, there may be special promotions being offered by a resort or cruise line that could result in a longer vacation having greater value. Also, if your vacation destination is a far distance, you may want to stay longer to justify the time and cost it takes to get there.
- Air Fare – The air fare on a major carrier will be more expensive than a low-cost or charter airline, and obviously, flying first class will be more expensive than economy class. Air fare also tends to be higher at certain times of the year such as holidays and spring break. It also varies depending on the destination you are flying to. There may be discounted air fare when it is combined with a cruise or resort vacation package.
- Venue – There are numerous venue options available for your vacation. For a resort vacation, your budget will be determined based on such things as star rating, room type, view, beach access, all-inclusive or European plan, and distance from airport or city attractions. For a cruise vacation, you should consider the cruise line and specific ship, type and location of stateroom, length of itinerary and ports-of-call, onboard activities and amenities, and embarkation and disembarkation ports.
- Meals, Activities and Entertainment – The cost of these items will depend on the type of vacation you are planning. For example, much of these costs are covered in the price of your cruise or all-inclusive resort. However, if you plan to stay at a major hotel or resort then it is important to include the additional amounts in your budget.
Establishing your vacation budget is important so plan to do the necessary research to determine both affordability and value. To save time and get the most accurate amounts for your budget, consider using a professional travel agent.
